Cost of roof moss removal: what makes the quote vary
In brief
In France, the prices shown by specialist websites range from about €8 to €16 per m² for simple moss removal and from €18 to €35 per m² for a full clean, more with a water repellent. The real price depends mainly on the area, pitch, access and condition of the roof: only a quote after assessment is reliable.
What makes the price vary
- The actual area of the roof covering, not the footprint of the house.
- The pitch and height: a high or very steep roof needs more equipment and safety measures.
- Access: scaffolding or an aerial lift are expensive. When the drone is suitable and permitted, it often makes them unnecessary.
- The material: tiles, slate, zinc, steel sheeting or fibre cement are not treated in the same way.
- The condition of the roof: a thick layer of moss takes more time than regular maintenance.
- Options: anti-moss treatment, water repellent, gutter cleaning.
How to compare two quotes
- Is the price shown including VAT, with the area measured?
- Is the method specified (ground, pole, drone, aerial lift) and suited to your roof?
- Is the treatment product named, and are rinsing and waste removal included?
- Is protection of the surroundings (window frames, vehicles, plants) planned?
A very low quote often hides high-pressure cleaning without treatment, which can damage the tiles and make the moss come back faster.
What about grants?
Moss removal on its own is maintenance: it does not qualify for energy renovation grants such as MaPrimeRénov’, which are reserved for insulation or heating work.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions.
Does the price per m² include the anti-moss treatment?
Not always: check on the quote whether the treatment is included or offered as an option, and which product is used.
Does the drone cost more?
Not necessarily: by avoiding scaffolding or an aerial lift, it can reduce the overall cost on a high or hard-to-reach roof. It is only used when suitable and permitted.
Why not give a price online?
Two roofs of the same area can require very different means. A fair price means knowing the pitch, access, material and condition of the roof.
